A recent study suggests that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying these drugs should be aware of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a return to original mass in about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally have a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Experts believe the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden return of cravings.
"It was like something that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Growing Use
Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Use is higher among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
